First Generation Students – Who Are They?

First-generation students

Description

First-generation students are typically defined as students who do not have at least one parent/guardian who has graduated with a college or university degree or students who do not have at least one parent/guardian who has attended college or university. Regardless of the definition used, what is at the center of the first-generation student status is a lack of social capital in higher education culture, including knowing how to interact with faculty, and generally, how to navigate one’s undergraduate experience.
